Ok obvious question that was probably asked but I can't remember!!

What types/forms of communication are available within the military, actually? Do they have anything, obviously less advanced than the Empire, in terms of even short-distance radio or anything? Or is it literally a case of only physical npc-runners/moogles everywhere??
